The humble broccoli. Love or hate eating it yourself, it certainly packs a powerful punch in the nutrition department - especially for your dog!

Here are just 5 reasons why we love adding broccoli to our core recipes.

1. Rich in Sulforaphane

Sulforaphane is a natural plant compound which is activated when glucoraphanin (sulforaphane in it's inactive form) comes into contact with myrosinase - an enzyme which plays a role in the defense response of plants.

But why is Sulforaphane so important?

Many studies have been conducted into this plant compound because of it's cancer fighting abilities!

Sulforaphane keeps free radicals (which damage cells over time) in check, decreases inflammation, removes carcinogens, increases apoptosis, helps stop the spreads of cancer and inhibits the formation of blood tumour vessels.

Studies show that eating broccoli at least 3 times a week can decrease cancer risk by 90%!

2. Helps strengthen the immune system

Broccoli is a rich source of Vitamin C. As we all know, Vitamin C is important when we're sick or stressed.

Whilst dogs can produce Vitamin C all by themselves, consuming it helps give them a boost when they need it.

3. It helps balance the microbiome

Prebiotics are indigestible soluble fibres and are essential to keeping the microbiome bacteria balanced. Broccoli is naturally high in fibre making it a great way to support the microbiome and digestive system.

4. Can detoxify the liver

Sulforaphane is the compound that keeps on giving!

Sulforaphane also activates the nuclear factor erythroid-derived 2-like 2 (Nrf2) pathway which is the system which produce and increase antioxidants.

NRf2 is also responsible for releasing the detoxifying genes used in the liver which breakdown compounds until their water soluble and can travel through the bladder.

5. Improves eye health

Broccoli is rich in carotenoids which convert Vitamin A in the body.

Vitamin A is responsible for the formation of light absorbing molecules which help vision and protecting the cells lining dog's eyes.

How do I ensure my dog is getting the maximum benefit from broccoli?

To make the most of all the nutrients from broccoli the best way to serve it to dogs is in it's raw form. Cooking decreases the amount of nutrients that can be absorbed.

The supercharge the effect, chopping or grinding broccoli, and then leaving it to rest for 90 minutes ensures maximum absorption of nutrients, especially Sulpforaphane.
