Although a raw diet is basically the most perfect diet for cats, making the switch from ultra processed cat food to a biologically appropriate diet can be very tricky!

Cats are imprint eaters. When they are babies, they learn what is safe to eat from watching their mum. This can make them very picky eaters as adults!

Although transitioning our feline friends can be challenging, it’s not impossible!

Meet Harvey!

He’s a 7-month-old Maine Coon who is currently training to be a service cat for his owner.

When he came to his new home he was on an ultra-processed diet but now, he has transitioned to eating our delicious raw recipes and is thriving as he embarks on his training journey.

Harvey's transition to raw food

Luckily Harvey was already on a wet diet which meant that his owner didn’t need to introduce this new food texture to him. If your cat is on a kibble diet, and you haven’t been able to successfully transition them directly from kibble to raw, you may need to introduce a wet food into their diet to get them used to the different texture. Luckily, our Gently Steamed product is the perfect option; inspired by raw and in a ready to feed format!

Harvey’s owner gradually mixed raw food into his normal wet food and increased the raw to wet ratio over a number of weeks. Because Harvey was feeling a little stubborn this took a few weeks to have a fully raw meal but it’s important to go at their own pace to ensure they, and their digestive system, are happy with their diet.

One thing Harvey’s owner found particularly helpful in his transition journey were our Bone Broths. He was a massive fan of them, so it encouraged him to eat his food when mixed in the same bowl as his raw. Bone Broth can be served at room temperature or slightly warmed to release aromas and whet the appetite so are a great option to encourage eating for fussy felines.

Now fully transitioned, Harvey is thriving along with his housemates, Misty and Ash, who have been on our recipes for a while. As house cats, a diet which reduces the amount of waste, and the smell is a huge benefit of feeding a raw diet. Plus, they have beautiful glossy coats, more energy and clean bowls at every mealtime.

How to transition your cat to raw food

  1. If you don't already feed your cat a wet food, it is recommended that you add a wet food into their diet before switching to raw. We suggest our Gently Steamed recipe!

2. Replace a forkful of their wet food with raw.

3. Gradually increase the ratio of raw to wet over a few days.

If your cat is feeling particularly stubborn about their food changing, you can add some Bone Broth to whet their appetite.
