Picking the right supplement for your dog

71% of UK adults take a food supplement today,  which is a 19% increase since a similar survey was carried out back in 2019. Unsurprisingly, the supplements market has grown at an unprecedented rate in recent years, as our awareness of, and appreciation for, our health has grown.

Of course, this growing trend of health and wellness has spread to our household pets. As members of the family, we want our pets to live long, happy and healthy lives, and high-quality supplements certainly have a role to play in this.

As a pet nutrition brand dedicated to helping pets lead active, comfortable and enjoyable lives, we have introduced a range of supplements to our portfolio to add that extra boost of targeted nutrition for pets. But which supplement is right for your dog?

What are supplements?

Supplements are concentrated doses of specific nutrients that are taken to boost our health, containing vitamins, minerals, herbs or other botanicals, amino acids, enzymes, and many other ingredients. As the name suggests, supplements are designed to be consumed in addition to a healthy, balanced diet. They’re certainly not a quick fix for a low nutrient diet.

Which supplement is right for my dog?

If your pooch is already enjoying the incredible health (and taste!) benefits of a Nutriment raw diet, they are already going to be consuming high-quality nutrition that is specifically designed to support canine health. However, there are always opportunities to even further enhance a dog’s nutrient intake, especially if they have specific health concerns or are a breed prone to certain conditions.

Joints and arthritis

There are many breeds of dog that are susceptible to joint health problems, such as Labradors, Springer Spaniels and German Shepherds. Owners of these breeds may find it helpful to consider a supplement that contains nutrients that can support joint health, such as omegas 3 and 6, glycosaminoglycans, and nutrients with anti-inflammatory properties. Leo & Wolf’s 4-in-1 Dog Supplement contains natural green-lipped mussel powder, which is known to support joint health in dogs. This supplement is simply added to their meals, providing an easy way to specifically target joint complains with high-quality nutrition.

Digestive concerns

Similarly to joint health, there are certain breeds of dogs that are prone to digestive concerns. If your pup suffers from an unhappy tummy (and unhappy side effects!), then you could consider a supplement to help. Leo & Wolf’s Mineral Moor Mud is a supplement high in humic acids, which helps to support optimal digestive and immune health. This product is also suitable for cats, meaning every four-legged friend in the house can benefit. Mineral Moor Mud can be added as a topper or mixed into their food.

Coat and skin health

Sometimes, environmental allergies can play havoc on a dog’s coat and skin. If your dog moults excessively, has dandruff or itchy skin, or a greasy coat, they may need some supplementary help to get their coat and skin health in order. Leo & Wolf’s 4-in-1 Dog Supplement contains natural ingredients which can boost immune and digestive health, which in turn help support coat and skin health. In addition to this, adding a high-quality coconut or salmon oil to their meals can help to boost coat health and appearance.

Immune system support

If your pup has a long-term illness, is having to undergo medical treatment or is prone to being poorly, their immune system may need some additional support. Leo & Wolf’s 4-in-1 Dog Supplement and BARF Complete Care both contain a carefully formulated combination of natural ingredients to support the immune and digestive systems.

Anxiety

Whether it’s separation, fireworks, travel, trauma, or just genetics, sadly some dogs are heavily affected by anxiety and stress which have detrimental effects on both their mental and physical health. Whilst prescription medication is sometimes the only option in the more severe cases, there are natural ways to support your dog in the form of supplements. Nutriment’s hemp treats are a natural, functional snack which provide temporary relief for the symptoms of anxiety.

If you have any health concerns regarding your pets, you should always visit your vet to discuss them. Additionally, Nutrient’s in-house canine nutritionists are always available to discuss your dog’s diet and how you can best support their health through nutrition.
